Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20th 1964) is an American politician and attorney who is currently the 49th vice-president of the United States. She is the first woman elected vice president and also holds the title of highest-ranking female officer in American history. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition, she served as an United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Harris was born and was raised in Oakland, California. Harris started her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She was then hired to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. She was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003. Harris was appointed Attorney General of California in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States senator from California from 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the 2nd African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. In her time as a senator, she pushed for health reform, federal descholaring of cannabis, a path for immigrants who are not legal citizens, the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. Harris also backed progressive tax reform. National attention was gained for her sharp questioning of Trump administration officials at Senate hearings. The most notable was Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual abuse.
